Additional Educational Materials

Having completed the class, and knowing just enough to be a hazard to myself and others, I set about obtaining further information and education.
On Sean’s advice, I purchased Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone interested in riding.
Another book I have found very useful is How To Ride A Motorcycle by Pat Hahn. While not as detailed as the Hough book, Mr. Hahn’s wit makes this an entertaining read. He also outlines a training plan for new licensees just venturing out onto the roadways for the first time.
One of the concepts in his training plan is the “Far Side Technique”. Picture the Gary Larson cartoon where a fish leaps from it’s pond, sprints across a road and splashes into another pond. The concept here is to add traffic complexity slowly, interspersed between riding on known, comfortable roads.
I studied these books, and searched we web, and talked my Wife’s ear off about bikes until December 9, 2008…..
